Unilever helps rebuild community devastated by tornado
Unilever SA joined the aid organisation Gift of the Givers in bringing relief to hundreds of families left homeless and hungry after a devastating tornado struck Duduza township near Nigel east of Johannesburg, at the beginning of the month.
The tornado left a trail of destruction – an eight-year-old boy was killed and over 160 people were injured.
This week Unilever contributed R100 000 towards the costs of constructingtemporary houses and also donated hampers containing food and toiletries and homecare products,
Gift of the Givers' Imtiaz Sooliman said there had been remarkable response to requests for donations in cash and kind to alleviate the suffering of those affected in Duduza.
"The compassion and kindness displayed by individuals and corporate organisations must be lauded.”
Elizabeth Pretorius, Communications Director of Unilever SA said: “Health and well-being is central to Unilever’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and responsible business practice.
“Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan aims to enhance the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people as we grow our business.
“We hope to have made even a small difference in the lives of the unfortunate victims of the tornado at Duduza.”
