In line with its commitment towards doubling its business while reducing its environmental impact, Unilever South Africa, has launched two new concentrated liquid laundry detergents.
The new OMO Auto Liquid and Skip Auto Liquid concentrated detergents offer consumers improved efficacy in terms of product delivery at the same time reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.Omo Auto Liquid Detergent's deep cleaning offers a better stain removal than powder, while the Skip Auto Liquid Detergent formulation contains special ingredients to care for fabrics and garments.
The launch of concentrates supported by creating consumer awareness around the right dosage, washing at lower temperatures and selecting the correct wash cycles (in machines) can substantially reduce the GHG emission in the atmosphere. Concentrates also allow for smaller pack sizes that lead to reduction of packaging material and thereby waste. The small pack sizes also mean fewer vehicles are required to transport these products, thereby reducing its overall environmental impact.
The bottles used to package the products are also made from recyclable material.
Nerisha Maharaj, Corporate Sustainability Manager, Unilever said the company has been working to make continuous improvements across the value chain in the management of its sustainability ambition.“We are looking beyond our factories to also explore how we can reduce our environmental impact by leading sustainable consumption, for example by developing products that enable consumers to make greener choices.”
As part of Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan, the company has globally committed to halve the GHG impact of our products across the lifecycle by 2020. According to the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, “our vision is to create a better future in which people can improve their quality of life without increasing their environmental footprint.”
Unilever is committed to long term sustainability. The company believes that small actions can make a big difference, and to that effect it aims to provide its consumers with products that enable them to make a difference.

Concentrated liquid detergents reduce GHGs by 10 – 15 % per dose.
If everyone in the world used concentrated liquid detergents, we would save over 4 million tonnes of Co2 per year, which is equivalent to taking 1 million cars off the road.
